How eSIM works

About eSIM

1 min read · Updated 11 October 2026

From buying a plan to getting online abroad, here is what happens at each stage and when your plan actually starts.

From purchase to online

  1. Choose a plan. Pick your destination, then the amount of data and number of days you need.
  2. Get your QR code. It arrives by email as soon as your payment goes through.
  3. Install the eSIM. Scan the QR code on Wi-Fi. See How to install your eSIM.
  4. Switch it on. When you arrive, turn on Data Roaming for your Simwander line and you're connected.

When does my plan start?

The validity period starts when the eSIM first connects to a mobile network in its coverage area. Installing it at home, outside that area, doesn't start the clock.

What a plan includes

  • Mobile data only. There's no phone number, so regular calls and SMS aren't included.
  • Your apps still work. WhatsApp, iMessage, FaceTime and other internet apps run over the data connection.
  • A set amount and period. For example 5 GB for 30 days. The plan ends when either runs out.
Running low?

You can top up or buy another plan from your account at any time. Plans don't renew by themselves.

Do I need to remove my SIM?

No. Leave your home SIM in the phone. Use it for calls and texts and set Simwander as the line for mobile data.
